Deformational plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, and scaphocephaly.

skull deformations caused by an infant lying in one position for too long. These conditions are also known as “flat head syndrome.” Newborn baby skulls are soft, as the bone has not hardened yet.

What causes Brachycephaly in babies?

Brachycephaly and plagiocephaly are commonly caused by the baby sleeping on their back every night. The back or one side of the baby's head (if their head naturally rolls to the side) is squashed against a firm mattress for a long time, which eventually forces the soft bone of the skull to flatten.

How do you treat Brachycephaly?

We recommend a specially molded helmet to help reshape your baby's head if the cranial sutures are open and the head shape is abnormal. In this situation, the molded helmet can assist your baby's brain growth and correct the shape of the skull. However, for most babies, surgery is the primary treatment.
